Disputes relating to international borders are common. They range from state-to-state disputes over territorial sovereignty and boundary alignment to local disagreements over access and use of areas in the vicinity of the border. Whatever the scale and intensity, border disputes are rarely easy to resolve to the satisfaction of all stakeholders. This Institute will explore: types of border dispute and their origins; the benefits and risks of different options for resolving disputes over borders; and how to minimize friction between borderland communities while formal efforts to find a permanent settlement are ongoing.

Martin Pratt is an internationally-respected expert in boundary-making, border management and territorial dispute resolution. He is the director of Bordermap Consulting, working with governments, international organizations, businesses, scholars and practitioners around the world to resolve and prevent boundary-related conflict on land and at sea. He is also an honorary professor at Durham University, where he worked for over 20 years as director of research at the International Boundaries Research Unit (now IBRU: Centre for Borders Research). He is a geographer and cartographer by training, specializing in technical aspects of land and maritime boundary delimitation.
