BIG Summer Institutes Program Update
2022
This year we offered two one-week long Borders in Globalization Summer Institutes at the University of Victoria.
From July 11th-15th, 2022, 16 students from 11 different countries participated in the Trade & Customs Borders in the 21st Century Summer Institute. The purpose of this institute was to explore the regulatory environment of trading networks looking specifically at how these networks functionally redesign borders and the ways in which they influence customs policies and practices. We welcomed a variety of speakers who represented both academia and the policy world. The next week, July 18th-22nd, 2022, 15 students from 8 different countries participated in the Cross-Border Management in a Comparative Perspective Summer Institute. The purpose of this institute was to examine local and regional changes affecting the politics and policies of cross-border regions and transboundary people.
This is the first year that we have been able to offer these institutes as Professional Development Certifications through the Faculty of Continuing Studies at the University of Victoria. For the students who registered in each course, 69% of the students in the Trade & Customs Borders institute and 100% of students in the Cross-Border Management institute completed the course requirements to receive their certifications.
